Swimmers compete in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim event on July 23, 2017. (TRT World and Agencies) More than 2,200 swimmers participated in the 29th Samsung Cross-Continental Swimming Race from Asia to Europe across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul.
At the Hellespont, four miles of water separate Europe from Asia. Last month my challenge was to swim it. In the tradition of Leander and Lord Byron, the Hellespont swim crosses the four-mile wide sliver of water that connects the Mediterranean to the Sea of Marmara.
Once a year, for 3 hours only the busy international Bosphrous shipping lane that connects the black sea and the Mediterranean is closed off for swimmers. The race starts from the Asian side of the Bosphorus and ends 6.5km later at a park on the European side. Upon completing this swim, you can proudly say that you have swum from Asia to Europe.

The European Aquatics Championships is the continental Aquatics championship for Europe, which is organised by LEN—the governing body for aquatics in Europe. The Championships are currently held every two years (in even years); and since 1999, they have included 4 aquatics disciplines: Swimming (long course/50m pool), Diving, Synchronised swimming and Open water swimming.

Loch Lomond – Scotland. You need a brave heart to swim in Scotland, but this beautiful loch – Britain's biggest puddle – might tempt you in. This is the home of the annual Great Scottish Swim (and also, apparently, a monster – albeit one without the celebrity status of its Loch Ness cousin).
